1999
Coachella
Last Updated: 11/2009

Notes:
The year of 1999 is worthy of examining in at least some amount of detail. After 8 years with the band, MJK followed up on a promise to record & tour with an ex-Tool roadie, Billy Howerdel. Together with Paz Lenchantin, Josh Freese & Troy Van Leeuwen they formed A Perfect Circle (APC). By the time the Coachella Festival came around, APC had played a few gigs and actually performed the day prior to Tool's outstanding performance at the Festival. Although there is still little discussion and speculation, MJK's involvement with the APC project caused strain, stress & animosity on the inter-relationships of the four parts of Tool. In 2001 when Lateralus was released, some lyrical content focused on healing wounds of some kind that may or may not be relevant to the information presented here. At any rate, this performance at Coachella was Tool's only public appearance in this year. The performance itself is absolutely stunning and is definitely one of the more interesting setlists in Tool's history. With a setlist that is as unique in song placement order as the haunting rendition + only live performance of the Peach classic Spasm, there is little doubt what the Coachella Festival's bill of 1999 will be forever remembered for.
