Band: The Music
Location: Detroit, MI, USA @ The Shelter
Date: Nov 5, 2002
Equipment: Mini Disc --- Core Sound Binaurals > Battery Box > Sony MZ-R700
Taping Position: Front Of Stack - Left
Notes: For those that may not know or care, the Shelter is in the basement of St. Andrews Hall located in the
heart of Detroit, MI - a city that is quite ugly & is an urban wasteland, sections are ok but the whole is a mess.
The Shelter is a very small & intimate club that has a max capacity of something like 300. When The Music
played here in November of 2002, there were a total of 35 people in the audience, band included. Their album
was not out yet & pretty much no one had ever heard of them due to lack of information, radio play and other
various factors. For me, seeing this sweet band with virtually no one around was an experience that will stick
with me, as far as concert experiences go, for a long time. Like my own private concert, very cool. Tickets
were only $7. Think I payed more money for parking & to a bum who was asking for beer money - I gave,
simply because he was at least honest. The Music came out & played a blistering set that only a handful of
bands I've seen in my life have matched. The professionality, precision & skill of The Music is sort of eerie -
for me, the future of British music may very well lay with this band. As for the set, maybe it had something to
do with the fact that barely anyone was there & they were sort of playing to play & were not doing anything for
anyone else. Figure, if a band cannot play under the stress of not having anyone, barely, there to play for then
how would a band handle being in front of 10K people? I don't know. As for the recoridng, for some reason,
the recording turned out to be one of my best & favorite recordings as well. I think this is one of the most
listened to masters I have thus far.
