Notes (2006):
This was torrented on dimeadozen.org by CU.org in October, 2006. To most people, this was a recording that would be considered "new" however there were a LOT of collectors who had this recording & the other SBD torrented, 01/27/1993. Among other issues associated with this, collectors were using this to attempt to extract X amount of recordings for this source, thereby creating more of a "value" for it. Sort of like an underground, black market Tool-live-recording trade. Other variables aside, by torrenting this recording, that removed the value placed on this. This was also released in remembrance to one of our one, Bjorn AKA onebear. The earliest known live performance around in any trade capacity this is, essentially, one of the most important live recordings of Tool known to exist.
Notes (old 1999):
Surprise! Maybe you came across this link by accident, maybe on purpose - either way, it is a hidden review... sort of like a Tool live recording 'Easter Egg'. There are others on this site, good luck finding them. If someone can name all of them, I'll give a prize of some kind. Although I believe that a fair amount of people have never heard of this recording, it is worth mentioning here, since I bet no one will ever find this. Haha. Anyway, certain people do have this recording and I have a good suspicion that this may make it out in some capacity as some people have given this to their friends, which is a cool thing to do. Although, some of these same people claim to be altruistic and saints - think we all know that people that proclaim to be something are most likely the opposite. Agreed? The vocals are very high in this mix, the bass is low, the guitar is low and the drums are present but not overpowering. Not like MJK's voice is. Whew. Even while living in an apartment in California working at a "Hell's Pizza" place (am I kidding? No.) you can hear, with this indisputable proof, the power of his voice. Will blow you away. This is the earliest known recording of Tool - ever. Although I am sure that somewhere there are even older shows ;o) As it is, this SBD recording has a little bit of high-frequency tape hiss that coats the show and due to the couple generations (and years) it took to get this on CD in some capacity, there is some tape hiss. This is hardly an issue though is it? As a note, I have encountered at least two other tape>CD transfers other than my transfer. That said, if you run across a CD copy of this show your CD time may vary from someone else's slightly. However, all transfers are incomplete and have the exact same setlist and flaws. Enjoy them.

(will vary depending on tape>cd transfer):

MJK: "There's a celebrity here tonight, one of the banditos d'amour from the Rollins stage presentation is here, one Ken Butler, who will be signing autographs by the concession stand so line up please, one at a time. We're still not very professional... so don't expect that kind of shit. We'll take our fucking time and you're just gonna have to deal with it. "So, how did the MTV Awards go? Losers."

Cold and Ugly

MJK: "Hey, Greg. I could use a little bit more in the monitor... of me."

Paul: "I want to hear some guitars. Hello... welcome to soundcheck. You guys like it? Ok you assholes better be at Lollapalooza early on Saturday to see the mighty Pigmy Love Circus!"

MJK: "Noon."

(performed - working lyrics)

Two days & I've been Baptized in
Your voice it speaks from deep beneath the endless water
It's twice as clear as heaven, twice as loud as reason
Cold and deep like silt on a riverbed
Just as never ending
The current's mouth below me
Opens up around me
Suggests and beckons,
all while swallowing,
surrounds and drowns and wash me away.

Shut up. Shut up now.

Want you to [be] me, just enough to get inside me not enough to [kill my mind],
Just enough to be on my side now.

Three days & I've been knocked out by your voice.
It screams, from deep, beneath the raging water
It's half as clear as heaven, half as clear as reason
Cold and deep like silt on a river bed
Just as un-disturbing.
Suggests and beckons,
all while swallowing,
surrounds and drowns and wash me away.

Shut up, shut up now.

Want you to be on my side, she's the one [who gets in my face for]
She's the one who wanted me, not enough to get on my side,
[Hear you say, drown,]
she didn't mind
Turn the other way!

Eu-phor-i-a, Eu-phor-i-a, Eu-phor-i-a, Eu-phor-i-a.

Right back down, I'm in the Undertow, I'm helpless and I'm
Way down beneath the Undertow - there's nothing that I can say,
I'm in your Undertow, there doesn't seem no other way,
Out of your Undertow.

Paul: "Can I have the vocals turned WAY down in my monitor? I mean... I like you, Maynard, but... I don't want to hear you all the time."

MJK: "I'll just be whispering in your ear from now on. Real rock stars have towels up here, but... we have to use our clothes. Yep. Yep."

MJK: "Do you know that punk rock is coming back? Last beer for you buddy."

Crawl Away
(with Ozzy's "Crazy Train" intro)

Paul: "Thank you. You're too kind. Greg can I have less vocals in my monitor? It's blowin' my head off. Is that what I'm doing here? Ok."

MJK: "Leave all your bottles and things over here in this corner. We need some gas money. So when you drink your beers, pass your bottles up over here and I'll be taking those home."

Paul: "Then put more guitar in it."

Danny: "One, two three!"

Swamp Song

MJK: "I... I don't need any more bottles. I remembered that I don't have a car, and I don't need gas... because I don't have a car."

Paul: "Greg can I unplug this thing? It's fucking blowing my brains out."

MJK: (said off-mic) "Ready for that, buddy? 4 degrees? You're gonna hurt yourself. You're gonna hurt yourself."

4 degrees
(cuts into... incomplete)

MJK: "That's really cool! You're tougher than she is. No really. You're tougher than she is. Really. No really. You are. I know that you are. I can tell. Tune up. Yeah. Tune up. John are you enjoying yourself? Don't fucking lie. This is intermission."

Paul: "This is a special song called... about the little baby Jesus. It's called Opiate."
